The 'Big ART Draw' at St Aidan, Skelmanthorpe
The Big Draw which began in 2000 AD, is a UK wide event in hundreds of venues, normally in October each year. The Big Draw encourages the idea that art is for all; and that everyone can get fun, insight, new ways of seeing, wonder and delight from the experience of looking and making their mark.
You do not have to be Paula Rego, Picasso, Beryl Cook, Vincent van Gogh or Tracey Emin to be able to draw. Forget any bad art experiences, at school or elsewhere. 'It's no good, I can't draw!' Yes, you can!
This year the Big Art Draw at St Aidan took on Saturday 22nd October (10.00am - 5.00pm) and Sunday 23rd October (11.30am - 4.30pm) 2005. St Aidan's Church was open for anyone to come and have a go at making their mark; and just over 40 people of all ages took that opportunity.
We might hold another such event in Spring 2006. In which case there would again be some basic basic drawing materials for you to use, or you would be welcome to bring your own art materials if you wish.
Refreshments will be available.
There is no fee, but donations are welcome to cover the cost of art materials and refreshments !
This event is under the umbrella of Kitchenroyd Art Group, and is also part of the community and cultural public service of St Aidan's Parish Church.
Kitchenroyd Art Group meets in the Reading Rooms, Kitchenroyd, on Monday evenings. Bring your own art materials, any medium, come and enjoy creating - no tutor, but friendly peer group encouragement. For details please contact Karen: 01484 609472 or telephone/email Philip
When a new date is set please come and give the experience of drawing, making art, a try - simply for your own pleasure and interest. Drop in for 20 minutes, or a few hours, as you wish.
Why draw - create art ?
There are a vast number of reasons, including:
- because it's fun
- because it helps us look and really see, perceive, observe
- because it can help communicate and record our feelings, understanding
- because it encourages creativity
- because it helps hand-eye-brain co-ordination; and is a skill that aids our thinking process
- etc, etc...........
- because it's fun
Possible 'Big Draw at St Aidan' activities include:
- drawing a 'still life' (we can provide some objects)
- using a mirror to make a self portrait
- bring your photograph's to create a starting point
- a drawing or portrait of another person
- an idea in your head, pure imagination
- parts of church interior (or go outside for exterior view)
- ideas from postcards (we can provide)
- practise recording perspective, proportions, tone, shadow...
- etc, etc...........
You do not have show anyone what you have done, or create a 'finished' picture, or prove anything...... just enjoy
Philip
